Corona & Climate

It is 26th March, still early in the year of Corona and what will occur remains to be seen. I won’t waste your time with lots of preamble but basically it could offer us a micro mirror with which to look at the ecological crisis.

This year is global v1 for managing acute global virus, thinking logarithmically, trying to trust the science and indeed the social rules. we are not just skilling up for covid19 or any other corona or even any other virus. we are learning at scale what a global & hyperlocal life can look like, rapidly and radically altering out lifestyle to preserve life in the near future.

If we can make it into v2 (2021) with minimal damage then we will be 10x better at managing any kind of acute global risk. Mother nature has been kind that this warning shot in 2020 probably only threatens 5% of human life in the worst case scenario (50% infected with 10% death) and gives us a chance to learn how to tool up with everything from economic schemes to testing to learning how to record on zoom!

Our situation with climate change is very similar only 10 times longer and 10 times more risky. Climate scientists at the end of 2019 agreed we have a 5% chance of an extinction level event (ELE) in 2080–60 years time.

In the same way the eco-crisis will sneak up on us, if we can do the hard work in V1 then we will be 10x better in V2 but we must not lose sight of the potential human ending threat. We must not stop treating the cancer even though we currently need a ventilator.

So I encourage you to think of this tragedy of corona as a warning shot not only for other acute global challenges but also as a micro mirror to help us see what we must prepare for our 10 year challenge ahead.

Until I am enlisted to volunteer on the ventilators I will carry on working on the cancer therapy.
